There has been a paucity of Indian textbooks in the field of respiratory medicine. Last year has witnessed the arrival of some high-quality indigenous publications in the field. One of the important additions is the "Textbook of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine" by Dr. SK Jindal (Editor-in-Chief). Dr. PS Shankar, Dr. Suhail Raoof, Dr. Dheeraj Gupta, Dr. Ashutosh N Aggarwal, and Dr. Ritesh Agarwal are the associate editors. Dr. Jindal is the Professor and Head of Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.

Dr. Jindal is known among the respiratory professionals for his quality and integrity that he has maintained. He is an eminent respiratory physician and an esteemed medical faculty. He has done pioneering research work in several areas of respiratory medicine and has received many awards. He has been actively involved in editorial work related to various national and international publications and has been a member of many taskforce and guideline committees. Most of the sections in this textbook have been edited by Dr. Jindal himself assisted by a group of national and international experts on the subject.

This first edition of "Textbook of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine" is dedicated to expanding human potential needed for handling the growing vastness of the field. This book is an excellent example of planned approach to the greatest extent possible. It adopts an integrated and systematic approach to respiratory diseases. This book has XXIII sections divided into 173 chapters. Volume I includes important chapters on respiratory physiology, microbiology, pathology, and pharmacology. Clinical issues like history and respiratory examination have been given particular emphasis as most of the diagnoses in clinical medicine are based on a meticulous history and adequately performed physical examinations. It has separate chapters on customary as well as advanced diagnostic modalities in respiratory medicine. Tuberculosis and respiratory infections have always occupied an important place in the health care of tropical and developing countries. This issue has been covered comprehensively in this textbook. Practical issues on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have been dealt with rigorously and efficiently. State-of-the-art management of the diseases has been highlighted throughout the textbook by the experts in the respective field.

Volume II includes interstitial lung disease, environmental, occupational, and other lung disorders. Description of lung tumors and management approach has been depicted in an appreciable style. Respiratory and critical care medicine has been given a special emphasis. Inclusion of newer perspectives in pulmonary and critical care medicine adds to the beauty of the publication. Respiratory monitoring and therapeutic modalities used in intensive care have been covered extensively. This will definitely inspire respiratory physicians across the globe to update care of patients with critical illnesses. Description on arterial blood gas analysis, invasive procedures like cannulation, intubation, and ventilation are some of the examples of conscientiously covered areas, especially keeping Indian context in mind. You will discover here in-depth chapters on pulmonary manifestations of a systemic disease, surgical aspects of respiratory diseases, and descriptions on rare lung diseases that will be hardly found elsewhere.

It also covers the most recent developments on subjects like genomics, health economics, ethics, and end-of-life care. Images, tables, flow charts, and other illustrations are excellently blended with neatly arranged text in this textbook. Most of the references are up-to-date and special care seems to have been taken in this respect. This book was released in May 2011 and is one of the best sellers in pulmonary medicine at bookshops and online bookstores like www.amazon.com, www.bookstores.com, and www. jaypeedigital.com. This is a highly useful textbook as well as reference book not only for clinicians and postgraduate students in the field of respiratory medicine but also for others related to physiology, pharmacology, pathology, and research institutes. Overall, we highly recommend this book as an excellent and durable reference on respiratory medicine.
