Smoking Index - A Measure To Quantify Cumulative Smoking Exposure

‘Smoking Index’ is a parameter used to express cumulative smoking exposure quantitatively. This is especially useful in defining risk ratio of a smoking related disease. The parameter is smiliar to ‘Pack Year’ but more suitable to Indian subjects.

An Inexpensive Combination Chemotherapy For Inoperable Lung Cancer

Vincristine, cyclophosphamide and methotrexate combination chemotherapy was administered on an outpatient basis to 25 patients of advanced bronchogenic carcinoma. The overall median survival of the patients was 30 weeks, patients of small cell carcinoma had a median survival of 23.5 weeks and it was 25 weeks in cases of patients of non-small cell carcinoma. Eleven patients (44%) survived for six months or more, five patients (20%) survived for one year or more and two patients (8%) survived for two years or more. The drug combination is relatively cheap and had no major side effects.

Barium Sulphate - A Contrast Medium In Bronchography

Barium Sulphate has been used as a contrast medium for bronchography in fifty patients of various chest disorders. Successful bronchograms were obtained in 90%, without any major complications. Radiological evidence of retention of contrast medium was observed in five patients.

Particle Size Distribution In Cigarette Aerosol - A Smoking Machine Estimation Applied To Human Lung Model

Trace elements play an important role in human health. Cigarette smoke aerosols contain many toxic and harmful elements. Concentrations of harmful elements in different size ranges determine the inhalation health hazards. Particle size distribution of some elements in cigarette smoke aerosols had been studied using Cascade Impactor and the results are reported. Mass Median Aerodynamic Diameter (MMAD) of bromine, potassium, sodium and iron was found to be 0.27 to 0.42 mm for filter tip and non-filter cigarettes. The concentrations of these elements were determined by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA). Using the lung model of International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP), the amounts of deposition of these elements in the human respiratory system has been estimated. Relative hazards of polonium-210 are also discussed.

Oxygen Consumption In Obese Individuals

One minute incremental maximal exercise test was carried out on a motorized treadmill in nineteen obese individuals (10 men, 9 women) and nineteen normal healthy volunteers (9 men, 10 women) for their oxygen consumption. The results indicate that there was no significant difference in oxygen consumption in relation to their body weight and lean body mass in both the groups during submaximal exercise. At maximal exercise the VO2 max in relation to body weight was significantly lower in obese men and women. Lower Oxygen consumption in relation to body weight at maximal exercise could be due to lesser percentage of lean body mass (LBM) proportional to body weight.

Arterial Hypoxemia In Acute Tropical Pulmonary Eosinophillia

Arterial oxygen tension were estimated in 48 acute tropical eosinophilic patients. Twenty (42%) had PaO2 of less than 80 mmHg, though 18 had only mild hypoxemia (PaO2 –70-80 mmHg). A smoker had PaO2 of less than 60 mmHg. The single breath carbon monoxide transfer factor (TLCO) was lowered in 42 (88%) patients. The PaO2 correlation with both FEV1% and TLCO percent predicted was not strong. Obstructive ventilatory and diffusion defects may not be the main mechanisms of hypoxemia in these patients.

A patient developed reaction to isoniazid, thiacetazone, para amino salicylate, pyrazinamide, cycloserine and streptomycin. Offending drugs were identified by challenge doses. Initial three-months steroid cover was required. The patient was successfully treated with a combination of rifampicin and ethambutol.

Overt Diabetes Mellitus In Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Six hundred and twenty pulmonary tuberculosis patients were screened for diabetes mellitus. Thirty-three (5.3%) patients were found to be diabetic. Prevalence in males was 5.8% and in females, 4.4% Prevalence increases with age. Lower lobe tuberculosis was more common in the diabetics. The tuberculosis spectra in the diabetics included more advanced, exudative and cavitary types. The newly diagnosed diabetics tended to improve their glucose tolerance with adequate antituberculosis therapy. There was no statistical difference in the response rates (of the tuberculous disease) between those on oral agents and those receiving insulin.

Disorder of the respiratory system is a major cause of professional diver disqualification. Pulmonary function assessment is an essential component of diver fitness evaluation. Forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) of 100 Indian divers are presented. They had much higher FVC, FEV1 and PEFR than those predicted for Indian general populace.
